Updates From Africa – January 23

Report from Toni:  Ingrid met with us at the CPS Guest House in the morning.  It was good to hear an update of the Yawezekana SACCO, and especially good to see how well she looks and sounds.  We also met with Sr. Annet, whose education was sponsored by a generous MPA donor.  Sr. Annet is preparing for her first professional assignment as a teacher.  She will be going to the Nubian Mountain, an area between Sudan and South Sudan to coordinate the secondary school there.  After she gets herself familiar with the existing challenges, she is adding one of her own to the list:  she hopes to incorporate microfinancing education within the Form Four (senior year of high school) curriculum.  Impressive!
Report from Julie Gundlach:  Julie Shearburn and I visited the Levuka Center, the addiction treatment center, today. It was fantastic. They have sheep, rabbits, chickens, and cows. They are getting over 40 L of milk a day, allowing them to sell the access. They are farming the land surrounding the center, over 20 acres. They have not had to buy corn, potatoes, or beans for over eight months. We ate lunch with the clients, and had a meeting. Julie was so thrilled. I gave Tom the books and CDs and he was so grateful. His dream is the new center on Jamii Bora’s land. It would hold 100 patients. 75 men and 25 women, with space for the children so it would be easier for the women to attend. It was so good to see him, and he passes on greetings, especially to Ron and Dick.
We are having a great time- Buwea was amazing.
Tomorrow the two sisters and the two Julies will accompany Janet Bett on the streets of Nairobi to meet with street beggars, then meet with Yawezekana members who are running their income projects thanks to small loans, in the slum of Kibera, and then meet Ingrid Munro for dinner.
