From Livestock to a Thriving Nursery: Catherine’s Story of Growth and Opportunity
Catherine joined the Bukoba Women’s Empowerment Association (BUWEA) seeking knowledge, support, and the chance to build a better future for her four children, who are pursuing education at the primary, secondary, and college levels. Through BUWEA’s training programs and seminars, she gained valuable skills—and with the support of Microfinancing Partners in Africa (MPA), she took her first step toward financial independence.
Catherine started with a small livestock project, receiving domestic animals to generate income for her family. For two years, she nurtured and grew her farm. Then, with the proceeds from selling two large pigs and eight piglets, she expanded her efforts into a new venture—establishing a tree nursery.
Her nursery now includes a variety of fruit and timber trees, both in high demand in her community. In just three months, she sold 3,000 young trees, earning $150/ month. This income made a tangible difference for her family, helping to buy school shoes, uniforms, and essential household items.
With her business thriving, Catherine is looking ahead to the next phase of growth. She is grateful for the support of BUWEA and MPA, which has allowed her to provide for her children’s education while building a sustainable future.
