Paul Nkuke, a 49-year-old father of ten from Nakawanga Village in Uganda’s Lwengo District, is a testament to the transformative power of the Microfinancing Partners in Africa’s Cow Program. Paul joined the program in 2018 through MADDO (Masaka Diocese Development Organisation) after completing training in livestock management, where he received his first cow.
In Paul’s words, the cow became a “developmental tool” for his family, helping him overcome soil infertility that had plagued his land for years. “The crops I planted yielded poorly,” Paul recalls. But the manure from his cow brought life back to his garden, enriching the soil and boosting yields for both food and cash crops like maize, coffee, and even vanilla.
A Ripple Effect of Growth
With improved harvests, Paul was able to feed his large family and generate income from surplus crops. “Every member of my family carried a smile,” he says. As the cow produced milk—14 liters daily—Paul set aside 4 liters for his family’s consumption and sold the rest to a local dairy, creating a sustainable income stream.
The ripple effect of this opportunity didn’t stop there. When the cow had its first calf, Paul passed it on to another community member, spreading the benefits of the program even further.
Investing in Education and Infrastructure
The income generated from his cow enabled Paul to move six of his children from public UPE (Universal Primary Education) schools to private schools with better facilities. He dreams of enrolling all his children in private schools by next year.
Additionally, Paul expanded his land from one acre to three and made significant home improvements, including renovating his house and installing a 10,000-liter water tank to collect rainwater – providing clean drinking water for himself, family and cow!
Gratitude and Vision
Paul’s gratitude is profound. “I am really grateful to the Diocese of Masaka, MADDO Dairies, and our dear funders at MPA for this life-changing community development project,” he says. “It has proven to be transformative for many livelihoods, including mine.”
