A teacher with a passion…
Milder Achieng Oyugi was visiting Nairobi when she first heard about Yawezekana SACCO and the opportunities for a micro loan to start her own business. Immediately when she returned home to the shores of Lake Victoria, she began saving. She realized that by saving she could take a loan and bring her dream, of changing her community through education as she had always envisioned, one step closer.
Milder is trained in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE). After saving on her own, she joined Yawezekana SACCO in March 2017 and continued saving. By July 2017 she opened a class for the neighborhood children at Obaria Beach Homa Bay, Kenya. “My school takes care of 56 students and I hope to grow it so as to help as many children as possible,” she said.
Milder, a mother of three started by saving between $1-2 USD per week from her millet farm to receive a loan for her school. The farm occupies about two acres of her four acres of land, where she also keeps a few cows and some chickens. The products from the farm supplement the school!
“A passionate teacher can change the attitude of society, impacting the community.”
Fast Forward to 2019:
Milder has since built three classes to help needy children. Her passion for education and her determination to use a loan to build income are changing her community.
